What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing. The term Reiki means “universal life energy.” It is traditionally written using two stacked Japanese kanjis or characters. The top kanji is called rei, meaning “spiritual” or “sacred”; the bottom kanji is called ki, meaning “life force energy”.

Energy healing modalities are based on the understanding that every living being is composed of life force energy. Reiki practitioners work by connecting to healing energy, bringing it through their energy body, and channeling it into their clients’ energy body, where it merges with their clients’ Ki.

This energetic vibration has the power to dissolve your energy blocks, raise the vibration of your chakras, and restore your Ki energy’s flow and balance. By introducing healing energy into your energy body, you are supporting your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing.

History of Reiki

Reiki was first established in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui. After spending decades searching for answers about natural healing, Dr. Usui joined a monastery in Kyoto. In 1920, he set off on a spiritual pilgrimage to the holy mountain of Kuriyama to fast and meditate in solitude. At the end of his twenty-first day, he had a profound spiritual experience that revealed ancient Sanskrit symbols to him. Out of that experience emerged the birth, or re-discovery, of Reiki.

Lineage of My Reiki Training

In 1922, Dr. Usui became the first Grand Master of Reiki. Since then, many have followed in his footsteps.

The lineage of my Reiki training can be traced back to Dr. Usui as follows:

  • Dr.Mikao Usui:  First Grand Master of Reiki, 1922
  • Dr. Chijiro Hayashi: Second Grand Master of Reiki, 1925
  • Hawayo Takata: Third Grand Master of Reiki, 1940 (first female Grand Master; responsible for bringing Reiki to the West)
  • Phyllis Lei Furumoto: Fourth Grand Master of Reiki, 1979 (granddaughter of Hawayo Takata)
  • Anita Levin: Reiki Master, 1980
  • Sheri Fogarty: Reiki Level 1, 1985; Reiki Level 2, 1997; Reiki Master, 1998

I look forward to sharing this powerful method of energy healing with you, so that you, too, may enjoy good health on all levels of your being, from the inside out!

What Are Chakras?

Chakras are the energy centres in your body that correspond to different aspects of your life — most often, your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning “wheel of light” or “disc of light”. I refer to chakras as your “feeling centers” because they constantly respond to how you’re feeling by opening, closing, and spinning. It’s natural for your chakras to move in and out of balance, but when you experience strong, painful emotions, these energy centers can struggle to regain equilibrium. If this imbalance persists, it can affect your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Each chakra governs a specific part of your mood, spiritual wellbeing, physical health, and more. When your chakras are open and balanced, you feel well on all levels, but when they become unbalanced or blocked — typically through difficult life experiences, this can leave you feeling stuck, disconnected, or anxious. It can also lead to sleep challenges, tight muscles, headaches, and other physical aches and pains.

Your seven main chakras are located along your energetic spine (known as your Sushumna), which feeds them with life force energy. Your Sushumna starts at the base of your skeletal spine and runs up to the top of your head.

What Do Chakras Look Like?

Chakras can be sensed or visualized in different ways. A balanced chakra feels open and vibrant, while a blocked or unbalanced one may appear small or cloudy. Your seven main chakras are associated with the colors of the rainbow, from red at the base (1st chakra or root chakra) to white at the top (7th chakra or crown chakra). Though the energy of each chakra appears as one dominant colour, you might notice variations in the colour, texture, or circumference of the energy in that chakra at any time, depending on how you’re feeling emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.

The Seven Main Chakras

Root Chakra (1st chakra):
Located at the base of the spine and associated with the colour red. It is related to survival instincts, grounding, security, and your connection to the physical world. Physically, it governs the kidneys, ovaries, and testes.

Sacral Chakra (2nd chakra):
Located just below the navel and associated with the colour orange. It is related to creativity, passion, pleasure, and your emotional expression. Physically, it governs the pancreas, bladder, and reproductive system.

Solar Plexus Chakra (3rd chakra):
Located just above the navel and associated with the colour yellow. It is related to self-esteem, personal power, confidence, and the way you react to criticism. Physically, it governs the adrenal glands, spleen, liver, gallbladder, and stomach.

Heart Chakra (4th chakra):
Located in the centre of the chest and associated with the colour green. It is related to love, compassion, emotional balance, and connection with others. Physically, it governs the heart, lungs, breasts, and circulatory system.

Throat Chakra (5th chakra):
Located in the throat and associated with the colour blue. It is related to communication, self-expression, truth, and manifestation. Physically, it governs the throat and thyroid.

Third Eye Chakra (6th chakra):
Located in the center of the forehead and associated with the colour indigo. It is related to intuition, insight, wisdom, and clarity. Physically, it governs the pituitary gland.

Crown Chakra (7th chakra):
Located at the top of the head and associated with white light. It is related to your spiritual connection, higher consciousness, and oneness with the universe. Physically, it governs the pineal gland.

How to Bring Your Chakras Back into Balance

One of the most effective ways to restore balance to your chakras is through energy healing. Techniques like Reiki and the use of healing crystals work by naturally merging with your own life force energy. These methods resonate at specific energetic frequencies to clear energy blocks and restore your chakras back to their optimal state.
